History of Boxing
in Thetford
Boxing has a proud history in Thetford, inspiring generations of athletes and enthusiasts. From its early roots to today, Thetford Town Boxing Club continues this legacy, keeping the sport alive at the heart of the community.

How It All Started
Early Roots of Boxing in Thetford
The story of amateur boxing in Thetford dates back to the early 1970s with the founding of Spartan Amateur Boxing Club (Spartan ABC) by coach Dave Nimmo. Before Spartan ABC officially opened, Dave trained young people in the old maltings building, laying the foundations for a thriving local boxing community. Spartan ABC closed in 1979 when Dave moved to Scotland, but his influence and dedication continue to inspire the sport in Thetford. His wife, Ronnie Nimmo, remains involved with TTBC to this day as a valued supporter.
Silver Ring ABC
Following Spartan ABC, Silver Ring ABC was established under the guidance of coach Barry Trainer. This well-loved club flourished until its closure in 1992, producing skilled athletes and fostering a strong local boxing culture. Many current TTBC members, including Head Coach Matt, trained and competed under Barry’s guidance. Barry remains a close friend of the club and continues to support TTBC.
TTBC Today
Thetford Town Boxing Club proudly carries forward this rich tradition, keeping the heart of boxing alive in Thetford for future generations. TTBC honours the legacy of those who came before while providing a welcoming, supportive environment for everyone passionate about boxing, fitness, and personal development.
